Monica Dean is an Emmy award-winning anchor/reporter for NBC7 San Diego. Monica anchors NBC 7’s weekday newscasts at 4 & 5 and delivers NBC7’s “Inspiring San Diego” news reports. She joined the NBC 7 San Diego news team in June 2004 and won her first Emmy for her report on the migrant worker camps in Carmel Valley in 2006. She was also awarded an Emmy for team coverage of the 2007 San Diego Firestorms and for coverage of the 2016 riots at the Donald Trump Rally in downtown San Diego.

Monica is one of the founders of the KNSD Academy, an experiential learning program at NBC 7 & Telemundo20 that introduces high school students to a career in TV News.

Monica Dean has lived and worked all over the world, but California has always been her home. Monica grew up in San Diego, the daughter of a Navy Captain and local dental hygienist.  She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA and her master’s degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago. Monica’s first job in TV news was working behind the scenes at KTTV FOX-11 News in Los Angeles, CA. She got her start on-air as the Washington D.C. political correspondent for WCAX, the CBS affiliate in Burlington, VT. While in the Nation’s Capital Monica was also the television health reporter for an eight-station news group stretching across the United States. Monica came to NBC7 San Diego after more than two years in Bakersfield, CA where she was an anchor/reporter at the CBS/FOX affiliates. Monica received several awards from the Associated Press and Kern Press Club for her work in Bakersfield.

Monica is passionate about family, faith and community. She is married and has three young children. Monica loves being a mom and is actively involved in her children’s lives.  Monica can often be found volunteering at school; teaching art to elementary students, moderating classroom book clubs, emceeing school events and inspiring future journalists through interactive presentations. On the weekends Monica is often cheering from the sidelines of her children’s numerous sporting activities and fine arts performances. She and her family attend Canyon Springs Church in Scripps Ranch.
